In Cleveland OH around the same time men working in mines under Lake Erie were in danger of dying in mines where toxic gases were present. Garrett Morgan volunteered to rescue them because he had recently invented the gas mask. He and his brother brought at least 2 men out alive. Current gas masks are still based on his original design. Later he invented the traffic light after witnessing a fatal accident that killed a young girl. He sold his idea to General Electric for $40,000.

SilverDreameater9011, Many people may not know that Morgan was African American, something he took into account in marketing his smoke hood, given attitudes at the time. "He was able to sell his invention around the country, sometimes using the tactic of hiring a white actor, who would take credit rather than revealing himself as its inventor." - Wikipedia
