Sometimes I feel like Charly. My IQ is 120. smart enough to see all the dysfunctions and beauty in the world and how they are sullied by inhuman human processes. But not smart enough to figure out what to do about them.

I loved both book and movie!!! so tragic when Charly realizes he's what's happening to himself and Algernon-broke my heart!!!💔

Phiend99, Awakenings was based on true events. It had to do with the brain neurotransmitter dopamine. The patients couldn't initiate movement without this. A doctor discovered a cure that replaced it, L- dopamine, but only short term. Very sad.

My IQ is 140, as were my parents. One of my nephews is considerably higher. I’ve attended Mensa conventions. Having a high IQ doesn’t necessarily equip you to solve social or political problems because those require empathy, communication skills and common sense - which many people with high IQs lack. There’s a trade off for high IQ. I wouldn’t wish high IQ on anyone. Compassion is much more valuable.

I need to read this again! O my, it's been too many years. maybe I will understand it more.

Tanya, That doctor was Dr. Oliver Sacks. An amazing man. A kind and loving man who suffered much. A man of multiple interests who explored those interests. He cared for and treated all people especially those who were ‘warehoused’ and forgotten. He wrote numerous books on a wide variety of topics. I have all of them and belong to the Oliver Sacks Foundation.

I wonder who's considered redoing it? It sounds John Travolta did something like it? I stopped watching tv and films a few years ago.
