It's called nepotism and 'nephew' was all too often a euphemism for son. In any case, they wanted to keep the power in the family. Miss Claudy, Peter and Andrew were simple men from a very small country, not rich political giants ruling over millions in some form or other and trying to leave their mark as dynasts.
