What does V.S.O.P. stand for in the labelling grade of brandy?

it was originally designed to transport wine cheaply. At its destination the wine was meant to have the water added. This didn't happen though as they just drank it neat.

I thought VSOP was Very SPECIAL Old pale.

I was taught at catering college that it was very SPECIAL old pale?!!
