When is Songkran, New Year's national holiday in Thailand, celebrated?

Got this because Spring is the logical time for the year to begin.

I have known this during my work stint in Thailand's neighboring Laos where the share a similar new year celebration, they call it 'pimai' or water festival where you'll get wet and srayed water in public. Wrap your wallet in plastic if you get out during this day. I supposed this is based more on Buddhism.
