It is quite similar in design to a depth micrometer used by machinists. The depth micrometer is made of metal and provides readings needed to hold very extreme "tolerance" levels. Used one when I was a machinist from 1979-88.

Good tires has an area where the markings are present indicating the tire wear, no need of tool when bying Nokian tires in example.
