In which year did the driving test become compulsory in the UK?

Lots of people ( usually men) who were taught to drive by the services before and during WWII were not required to take a driving test. My father was one such, it always annoyed my mother as the were both born in 1922, but only she had to take a test as she wasn't in the forces.
