We had a piper playing Highland Cathedral to pipe us into the Register Office when we got married, and then he played as our guests were going in for lunch. Half of the guests were English and they absolutely loved it, as did the Scots.

there are a bunch of similar instruments in the Balkans, where they were probably invented. Samarsion mercenaries brought the pipes to Scotland in maybe Roman times. Their are pipes in Ireland, too

red rocket rambler, That wasn't what the question asked. In this context, "traditional instrument" means of cultural and historical significance to that particular Country, whether in war; theatre; poetry & prose; or busking. Scotland is well-known for the traditional use of the bagpipes.

Player #32875670, Napoleon heard the droning of the pipes in his final battle at Waterloo, when a cavalry of only 400 Scots Greys, assisted by the 92nd Highlanders regiment footsoldiers, charged through 5 ranks of his army. "These terrible Scots Greys, how they fight!", is what was reportedly said by Napoleon as he witnessed it happen.

wileycoyote, Many Americans have Scots descents, and there are many circles within the Eastern region of Scottish culture being celebrated. This includes things like wearing kilts as a casual-wear; bagpiping; celebrating Hogmanay; and having Burns' Suppers. In fact, the American Navy was founded by a Scot, John Paul Jones, so it may be more directly linked with him.

I have a IQ, it would depend on what you would consider the lineage from a primitive version of the modern bagpipes used today. The same question can be posited for the kilt; the pedal bicycle; and the postage stamp. The question's a good one to ask, but too broad.
