It's also an extremely sharp blade mounted on a sheet of plastic or metal with a device for sliding the vegetables across the blade without slicing your fingers off. I actual once did alive the top of my indeed finger off while using a mandolin to slice radishes. You wouldn't believe how closely a sliced finger tip resembles a sliced radish: the skin is very pale when deprived of a blood supply but is ringed with blood so it looks uncannily like a slice of radish with it's pale flesh and red skin. It took me a good few minutes to find it!
