Water starts expanding below 4 degrees C and is lighter than water. If it didn't, the ice would sink to the bottom and all the fish would be forced up, killing them all. No other substance is lighter as a solid than it is as a liquid. It'known as "the anomalous expansion of water". Without it there would be no life on earth. Isn't Nature wonderful?

tin2785, My 8th grade science teacher taught this 52 years ago and did my own experiment. Yep, it is true.

I can't say for sure, but probably it's because of 3 isotopes of Hydrogen (protium, deuterium and tritium) and their different atomic masses. in boiling or close to 100°C water protium containing H2O molecules evaporize faster leaving heavy molecules with deuterium and tritium, and those form ice structure faster and easier..
and for this reason if you take 2 waters with temperatures far from boiling point (let's say 35° and 45°) the one with lower temp will freeze faster..
but it's only my guess. please google it:)
