I haven't had any issues in Montreal or Quebec City, probably because they survive on tourism. But if you go to some rural areas, expect to be treated with contempt for not speaking French.

Montreal is actually the 4th largest French-speaking city. As for the people? I group them into 2 categories...French-Canadian who are an intregal part of Canada and french-speaking who want no part of Canada. These are separatists who want to be their own country and will only speak french.

My family is from Monteal. we went there in 1967 for the expo. I love that city. the people were friendly and I loved to hear French spoken in the Metro. The city is lovely and old.

Montreal is a wonderful city. It's got great restaurants and retained some of its history. Nice to visit surrounding areas too. Especially the Laurentions and Quebec City just down the St. Lawrence River.
