according to Nationals Geographic the birds become toxic, only in their feathers, from the beetles they feed on. Why the birds wanted to eat those beetles in the first place is something we'll never know.

Though I think it would've been a good idea to also inform us on how the bird uses its poison. Does it happen when the bird bites, or from its talons? I'm going to have to Google this one. lol
