Michigan is called the Wolverine state yet no Wolverines are in Michigan. it came about from a dispute with Ohio over the Toledo strip and the Ohioans said the Michiganders were as mean as Wolverines. because of this dispute is how Michigan acquired the Upper Peninsula as a trade for the strip. that's why the Upper Peninsula does not belong to Wisconsin even though it is landlocked with Wisconsin and not Michigan.

Gary, I have lived in mi. for 53 yrs. Yes Wolverines are in mi. There was one spotted a couple years ago on the ice between st. ignace and the mainland
