My uncle had a state sanctioned bird farm in NB. Out of all those birds I loved the owls most of all. When they look at you they have this haughty kind of "And you are....?" attitude. Then they turn around & ignore you. I was told years later by a wise woman that my totem is an owl. Maybe that's why I worked so many graveyard shifts?

Watched a northern spotted owl catch and eat a mouse, swallowing it whole in one gulp. Its wings never made a sound the whole time. The only thing heard was the squeak of the mouse as the bird's talons grabbed it.

Sit behind a stack of hay some night and make mousie squeaks through your teeth. You won't know there are owls listening until they whoosh within a foot of your face.

Great Horned Owls have tremendous grasping power in their talons. They crush their prey almost immediately. I read about a biologist who once said that if he had to go, he wished it were by a GHO. He wouldn't hear it coming and he wouldn't know what hit him.

Also, owls have very little oil on their feathers. This helps them to fly even more silently but they can't fly during wet weather like other birds of prey!

Ironstine, Although your point is well taken, if something is inaudible, it is effectively and essentially silent.
