I believe the answer is wrong. Australian sappers (Engineers)have a long and proud history dating from and especially during WWI and have always been unofficially known as tunnel rats. (My father's chopper was blown up by a booby trap left by the Viet Cong near such tunnels as it was taking a load of explosives to the sappers to blow the tunnel complex up. He survived but it was the end of Vietnam for him.)

As many note, “tunnel rats” were used most definitely in WWI. Bad question with no insult meant to those who encountered tunnels and tunnel rats in any war.
