The 1970 Mel Brooks movie *The Twelve Chairs* was based on Ilf and Petrov's book. I saw it a long time ago and remember it as funny, if a bit sad.
The article refers to the authors as "Soviet," which was correct at the time they were writing (1920s and 30s). When they were born (1897 and 1902), Odessa was part of the Russian empire.
