Which animal can successfully defend itself from a lion attack?

any of these animals may successfully counter a lion attack, but also may fail. a better phrasing would be which one is most likely (if these odds are known) to survive.

LuckyJockey4436, Agreed and giraffes in particular are very good at defending themselves against lions. I saw some footage on a wildlife programme of a giraffe successfully fending off a lion.

Luckyjockey. The key you are forgetting is "defend" . Successfully defend itself. A rabbit , horse and giraffe can not successfully defend itself. All maybe able to run away but none can successfully defend itself. A buffalo can for the reasons they have stated. Massive deference between defend and escape a lion attack.
