Arohanui, You are so lucky, they used to be quite common in Australian suburban back yards and called Christmas beetles because that was the time they appeared. I still have one I found dead as a child about 60 years ago and it's colour has not faded at all.

Apparently Dung Beetle eggs can be found in water reeds and in swamp land in Sudan near the blue Nile. They were also found in Egypt's Bantain Caves near Luxor ,but best known for being Scarabs and put in the Tombs of Kings and high Preists.
