Mike T, it's nowhere near "more than twice as many speakers of Spanish in South America". The figures are about 215 million Spanish and 210 million Portuguese.

Spanish and Portuguese are not the only languages of South America. At least 20 million people speak Quechua, Guaraní, Aymara, or another indigenous language. More than 6 million speak English (e.g., in Guyana).

The question is not which language is most spoken in South America but which language of the proposed answers is most spoken in South America.
