Unlike the rest of the cells in your body, your red blood cells lack nuclei.Other vertebrates such as fish, reptiles, and birds, have red cells that contain nuclei that are inactive. Losing the nucleus enables the red blood cell to contain more oxygen-carrying hemoglobin, thus enabling more oxygen to be transported in the blood and boosting our metabolism. "Mature" red blood cells, also called erythrocytes, do not have a nucleus. However, immature red blood cells DO have a nucleus. They are removed before the cells are "kicked out of the bone marrow" and released into the bloodstream. Seeing nucleated red blood cells (metarubricytes) in a blood test is usually a sign of severe anemia and/or disease.
