Which bird can recognize itself in a mirror?
Correct answer: Magpie

mitch
Aussie magpies are notorious for swooping in the mating season and can cause serious injury, but they recognise human faces and don't attack if they know you. I also had a flock of crows(correctly little ravens) in a gum tree making a combined song I had never heard before. When I went to investigate I found one newly dead at the bottom of the tree. I removed the body but they came back three days running so I can only conclude they recognised what had happened.

When we first moved into our 1st home we had a magpie that would come onto the back doorstep. We fed him minced beef. He would always come back - one day there were 2! So they continued until they stopped for weeks, then there were a family of 4 visiting!

oh and I actually had a pet European Jackdaw, saved from drowning. who was free flying, knew his humans (sunbathing on my head, trying to stuff bread into my ears and nose, if I wouldn't open my mouth) Really good friend for about 5years.

Anyone out there read books by Konrad Lorenz? His most famous one was 'King Solomon's Ring'. An animal behaviourist. His material about the behaviour of European jackdaws is fascinating.

When we lived in Australia we had a group of 6 magpies that would come every morning for their little ball of mince. Eventually all but 1 of them would feed from my hand. They also recognised their names and would politely wait their turn.Such a joy to interact with them as they each had different characteristics.
