Most of the mined palladium in the world goes into catalytic converters for cars because of its high melt point and extreme resistance to corrosion. Palladium having a price higher than gold per Troy ounce is why your catalytic converter is so expensive to replace.

Rhodium is used in catalytic converters as well. Palladium and Rhodium both typically have a spot price higher than gold.

ZyggyStardust, if a metal can be stretched into a wire it is ductile, you're referring to malleability, metal being able to be hammered into a thin sheet. Many metals can do neither.

I live in Delaware USA and in my neighborhood so many of my neighbors have had their catalytic converters stolen. I'm always in fear when I go to start my car that mines will be gone. I was at work and an associate at the store next door had hers stolen in the parking lot full of people! I saw it unknowingly as I was leaving. I had no idea that's what they were doing.
