Octopi are incredibly smart. They can figure out how to twist open a jar lid by wrapping their body around it & rotating. They are also amazing escape artists. They can get through the smallest openings or cracks. Find a book or video about them. You will be astounded.

Sonicgirl, The blue ringed ones are deadly here in Australia as young children are attracted to them when they find them in rock pools.

In a nutShell.., what you are describing are not Blue-ringed Octopus, but Blue Bottles (a jellyfish like colony of polyps ) The Blue-ringed Octopus lives in rocks around the coastline and almost never washes up on the beaches. Also their bite is nearly always painless, as their venom contains a powerful numbing agent.
