Who is the author of the 1929 novel "All Quiet on the Western Front"?

Saw the 1979 film first then read the book which was excellent, the new film 2023 contained a lot more action but wasn’t as gritty , still worth a watch. I wonder if anyone in the Nazi party actually read the novel before banning it? If they had they might have discovered the emotion called empathy.
