Early in Armstrong’s career, and well before they both turned pro, my father beat Henry Armstrong in the ring! Also, my dad was the alternate for his weight class on the 1932 US Olympic boxing team. As the alternate, he still would have gotten to travel to the Olympic city, which would have at least been a nice benefit, except that the ‘32 Games were held in Los Angeles, where he lived! And no, he didn’t get to fight in those games.
