What famous German-born novelist wrote "Steppenwolf"?

Siddhartha has such an unforgettable poetic first sentence: "In the shade of the house, in the sunshine on the river bank by the boats, in the shade of the sallow wood and fig tree, Siddhartha, the handsome Brahmin's son, grew up with his friend Govinda."

Siddhartha is still one of my favourite books... HH became a cult author in the 60's and 70's when his ideas were widely discussed and probably helped to form the belief system of the hippies
