Outdated and reprehensible tradition. Love should always be the only reason for Marriage!

I am not disagreeing with the answer description but: my knowledge of the term comes from ancient Rome. Julius Caesar had a child with Cleopatra (she was a descendant of Ptolemy, a general of Alexander the Great, and a Queen of Egypt, but not a Roman.) JC picked up the baby Caesarea. Thereby legitimising it as his, with rights as his child. Changing his relationship with Cleopatra from Morganatic to full marriage. The idea of Morganatic was about the role of the offspring. This act was important in the senate and contributed to anti JC feeling.

BTW, while the laws of succession in Britain are complicated and in Common law (influenced by precedent) there is no such thing as a Morganatic marriage in the Church of England. As such, it does not matter what the social status of the wife/husband is. Although, as with Queen Victoria and QEII, a consort as Prince Albert and Prince Philip are not monarchs.

You would think that, by now, people are just plain tired of royals who assume they're better than the rest of humanity. I prefer to honor people who've achieved something.
