The facts are that it was both mass murder and mass suicide. Those chosing to leave with the Congressman were gunned down at the airstrip. In Jonestown, many did choose to drink the poisoned Koolade and gave it to their children. However, you can clearly hear in the tape recordings, that there, were a number who did not follow the orders and were shot and killed. Jones took his own life by gun shot.

Perhaps the expression, "Drinking the Koolaid", comes from this tragedy, when describing a situation where a person or people are loyally following a belief or individual.

I knew Congressman Ryan when he was, Mr. Ryan, my government teacher at Capuchino HS. Jackie Speier was an aide. She was shot in the back. Survived. She has been representing CA (Dem) in Congress for a lot of years.

I was 17 when the mass suicide/homicide occurred. I recently watched a documentary about it and it was very sad. It's one thing for people to make such a horrible choice, but to include children is unthinkable.

People have been BLINDLY (with eyes wide open) 👀 following persuasive leaders, for centuries...for millennia & its happened in the USA as well, despite being the youngest nation on earth, where our "founding fathers" created a unique form of government, a republic, established here over 250 years ago. A system/nation with "checks & balances", giving freedom to its citizens, like no other! Yet people to date follow BLINDLY!
