SloaneRanger2019, Santa Anna was a ruthless dictator. He viewed himself as the Napoleon of the west. The settlers in Texas tried to reason with the Mexican government via Stephen Austin traveling to Mexico to meet with the authorities where they promptly imprisoned him. Also Mexico had recently rebelled against Spain and won its Independence and then tried to squash the rebellion in Texas and other northern provinces. Texas was eventually successful because of outside help from America and Europeans who came to fight. When the Alamo fell, Santa Anna had all of the bodies of the defenders of the Alamo piled in a heap and burned. then the bones were left for animals to scavenge. Tge people who fought for Texas did not fight for slavery, they fought for their own freedoms from the dictatorial rule of Santa Anna.

SloaneRanger2019, As a 6th generation Texan who had 3 ancestors who fought for Texas' Independence (one of which came from West Point to do so), I can tell you none of the three owned slaves and all three fought for freedom. which was the rallying cry for Texans.

I am related to David Crockett through his sister. He did not refer to himself as "Davy", but "David".
