In French, what does the word "croissant" mean?

Wow I never knew its name referred to it’s crescent shape, how cool. My fav croissant by far is the almond yum yum, warmed up accompanied with a nice coffee ah just divine, darn it now I’m hungry for one lol!

Often in this country they're known as crescents.
