Player #K, I know for fact that people used the metal kinds in the 80's. How, because I had one. After each use, you had to put it in a small pot that was only used for the catheter, cover with distilled water, boil for a certain amount of time, empty the pot and set the catheter on clean paper towels to dry and cool completely before using it again. THAT was the painful part, not the insertion.
