Player Cosmo Chic, The tuber is underground but it is not a root. It stores food and does not draw water and minerals. and it doesn't anchor the plant. Just as a leaf is not a twig. a tuber is not a root.

First of all, thank you for all these great question! And thank you for making me read more about all those topics. As yams are called "Yamswurzel" ("Yam roots") in German, I tapped the wrong answer. However, I found a reference to " tuberous roots" in an article about sweet potatoes, a distant relative of yams. Tricky question indeedy. ;)
