Haiti had to pay France an equivalent of $21 billion to compensate former plantation owners who had lost their property...the exslaves were the property! They finally finished paying off France in 1947!! The most overwhelming repercussion to Haiti for overthrowing their white enslavers was that NO country in Europe or the United States would do any business or trade with Haiti. What was before the slave revolt the richest island in the Caribbean became the poorest and it is still the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. What a price the Hatian people had to pay to be freed from slavery
