I'm surprised he sold them instead of donating them.

Ray C, It is my understanding that most of the people that supported the revolution did just that, support it. Many of our founding fathers were left in poverty

:(Nancy E):
That is an impressive amount of books for the time.

Mel
THE REASON JEFFERSON SOLD THE BOOKS IS HE WAS BROKE. HE DIDNT HAVE A CHOICE. IM SURE IF HE DID, HE WOULD HAVE KEPT THEM.

$24,000 in 1815? I wonder what that amounts to in today's money. 🤔

BellaLatte
Rai, inflation is up...$481,851.95 in today monies

if you ever visit DC, the Library of Congress is a beautiful building, and the Jefferson wing is on the second floor overlooking the main floor.

Thomas Jefferson was a good man who was genuinely interested in the welfare of people.

Books were a luxury in those days not easy to come by. If the library didn't purchase the books from Jefferson surely much time and effort would be expended to search and aquire a similar collection if at all possible
