Player #4250921, Under God wasn't even in the pledge until added later on. There is supposed to be a separation of church and state. Not everyone believes in God. Believe what you want...but don't force your beliefs on others. Religion has no place in government...other than the freedom to practice what you choose.

SaltyWillOWisp96651, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Never did I think that saying "one nation under God" would be a political statement. If people of religion don't stand up for their freedoms, than we will lose them.

WickedCommodore90382,
First of all noone is forcing you to say anything, nor would I. .You have your freedom not to believe.
Second, the first amendment prohibits Congress from making an establishment of religion, I am pretty sure what they had in mind was something like the Church of England. Professing a general belief in God doesn't exactly establish religion, at least in my mind.
Third, the first amendment also says that Congress shall not prohibit the free exercise of religion. If the vast majority of Americans want to say "under God " in the pledge, should they not have the right to do so, so long as they are not forcing others to say that.
Fourth, i question how secular the Founding Fathers were. Yes Thomas Jefferson was a deist, but he also wrote in the Declaration that men are "endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights ". He also wrote " I have sworn on the altar of God eternal hostility towards every form of tyranny over the mind of men" Not trying to take away your freedom, just asking that you allow me mine in the process.

Player #4250921, that's not freedom. that's forcing others to state your religious beliefs.

Brooke, I agree with you 100%. I cringe every time I hear someone say the US is a Christian nation. To me that would mean a person would he have to belong to a Christian religion to be a citizen. That is not Freedom.

a democracy is anything but tranquil, just watch evening news, but we wouldn't have it any other way.

The clause on promoting the general welfare is one of the more ambiguous parts of the preamble. What does that mean exactly?

If we cease to be one nation under God than we will be one nation gone under.
