As a big middle finger, Rome also salted the grounds of Carthage to ensure nothing would grow there.

The Romans had virtually no navy to speak of, but after their first engagement with Carthage, they found a wrecked carthaginean warship. They copied it, trained, and added an odd device.--a rigging that swirled and had a spike on top. When they got up to a Carthaginean ship, the Romans would drop the rigging onto the enemy's deck. The spike would strike with enough force to lash the ships together. Roman soldiers would then cross to the other ship and, uh, do what they did best.
