R. Lee Ermy actually retired as a USMC Staff Sergeant (E-6.) The Marine Commandant actually gave him an "honorary" promotion to Gunnery Sergeant (E-7) after Ermy's retirement for his positive portrayal of the US Marine Corp in film and TV. FACT

The Drill Instructors had a lot of words for us recruits. I will never forget my Drill Instructors. Semper Fi.

I can't believe it was 1987! Where does the time go!?

I went through USMC boot camp in 1969, this depiction was spot on perfection. It brought back a lot of memories. There was a rumor that something like this actually happened, but like I said it was a rumor. The most inventive cursing I’ve ever heard came out of the DI mouths. I often wonder what happened to those boys I went through boot camp with, I hope they made it back home safely.

Grandhighdruid
I watched this with my dad who was in Vietnam and he said it was just like he remembered.

The Sarge gave Private Pyle a hard time

I was lucky enough to meet R. Lee Ermey after his show Roll Call. His performance in FMJ was his second DI depiction. Check him out in The Boys in Company C.

The book The Short Timers is a fantastic read.

PanhandleGuy, So was I. But it was just a movie. Look what he did with JFK. Stone isn't known for being factual. Thank you for your service
