Which famous family of scientists has the most Nobel Prizes?
Correct answer: Curie
Montana Lady
...and being the first woman to win the Nobel Prize and the only person to win a Nobel in two different sciences only cost Marie Curie her husband, eyesight, health, and eventually her life.
She died nearly 85 years ago and her original papers are still far too dangerously radioactive to handle even today.

dollis1963, I'm pretty sure in this case Marie Curie got the recognition she deserved. Considering no one really remembers her husband most of the time.

Player #326446, Actually, the initial inspection came from Marie. At first, she was the one who got her curiosity aroused by the heavy rock given to her husband. She took an interest in that rock when was in a drawer and it managed to produce a picture of a key on a photo sensation slide. This was caused by radiation coming from the rock, up through the table, to the photo plate which was haphazardly thrown on top of a key. (As with many beginnings of discoveries, it was pure dumb luck that they lined up so to take the picture.) However, it was not until weeks later that the plate was developed (after being used to take a picture of something else) and there was that picture of a key. Marie got really into finding out why. At first, her husband was not that interested. After a while, her determination was contagious, and he joined in her curiosity. While he provide much experience and guide center to young Marie, she was the lead researcher, the driving force and the "come hell or high water attitude".

there's a really nice movie about This Woman's life, Marie Curie, played by the actress Greer Garson. It's quite compelling.
Ironstine
Montana Lady, Marie lived for 30 years with those papers .. I think they are safe enough for a short exposure ... her anemia would come from the accumulation of burns to her bone marrow by exposure to samples weighing eg 15 grams .... .the papers only got trace contamination on them .. like finger print transfers , drops of the radioactives in solution.. and that sort of thing ..tiny samples. it was always thought that perhaps unnatural radioactivity could be dangerous even at small levels , but 1. Curie had natural ( found in earth's biosphere ) radioactives anyway , 2. alpha ,beta ,gamma rays are similar no matter what atom they are from ...

Ironstine, even if not safe to be handled with just gloves (due to age), there is personal protective equipment that could be worn to minimize exposure if her papers were still highly radioactive

wow! I didn't realize so many in her family had won a Nobel prize. I knew her, her husband and father had which is why I chose Marie Curie.
