I used to collect farthings as a child and kept them in a red Oxo tin. They always seemed rather magical to me with the fine engraving of a wren on one side 😊

the big wheel bicycles that were common at the end of the 19th century were called "penny farthings" because of their resemblance to the big and little coins.

Player #5513970, So have I, as well as halfpennies, brass thruppences (3 pences), silver thruppences , florins, half- crowns, crowns - all the lovely old names. Plus, rarest of all, the short- lived _decimal_ half- penny. Britain has the distinction of being the only country to go decimal, but still keep a half value coin. That was because the new lowest value coin was worth 2.4 times the previous equivalent and thus 4.8 times the previous lowest value. (Farthings were extinct by then.). People were scared prices would rise. And they did. A lot of fraud and cheating went on.

impossible to put a value for them against todays currency - they were a quarter of a coin of which there were 2.4 in a modern penny! Over 9 of them in a coin that has almost no value today . (100 pennies in a pound). Shows how inflation has galloped. The However, I miss the old currency. You couldnt rely on calculators, for one thing. You had to use your brain far more. And after the change you always felt prices were being rounded up.

It was 4 farthings to a penny... Where does the "about" come from? When I was a child there were still half pennies in circulation but farthings were too low a value. To think of how much inflation knocks the lower values out... In pre decimal currency it was 960 farthings in £1!
