I used to collect farthings as a child and kept them in a red Oxo tin. They always seemed rather magical to me with the fine engraving of a wren on one side 😊

the big wheel bicycles that were common at the end of the 19th century were called "penny farthings" because of their resemblance to the big and little coins.

It was 4 farthings to a penny... Where does the "about" come from? When I was a child there were still half pennies in circulation but farthings were too low a value. To think of how much inflation knocks the lower values out... In pre decimal currency it was 960 farthings in £1!
