madmumma66,
A shilling was 12 pennies . The pound was 20 shillings , or 240 pennies .
When the UK converted to a decimal currency in 1971 the shilling was dropped and the currency then became 100 New Pennies to the pound .
Five New Pennies (np) became equivalent to one shilling

Player #10483191, wrong there, I'm afraid. There were 20 shillings in a pound. There were notes for half of a pound - a ten Bob note (10 shillings)and coins for 1/8th of a pound - the half crown, or 2/6. Florins were two shillings - ten in a pound.

madmumma66, shillings were 12 pennies prior to metric in New Zealand. When we switched to metric they based the 10 cent piece off it. Curiously, they set the NZ dollar as equivalent to half a pound sterling so the 5 pennies thing sounds right to me.
