Hans Christian Anderson could tell some sad stories. The original ending to The Little Mermaid is not something I would read to a kid.

Both Anderson and Grimm lived in hard times and wrote stories to teach the young the realities of life then. It may seem cruel to us now, but giving children false hope can often be much worse.

Player #19910669, agreed, I loved the original tales, and those of the grimm brothers, when I was young, but my daughter wasn't keen on the brutality and grief in them.

The old fairy tales as written by Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm are far, far different than the sanitized, Disneyfied tales today. I had a book of Grimm fairy tales as a child that I preferred to today's versions.

Oscar Wilde wrote many children's stories, very beautiful stories with a Christian motif, about love, and faith and doing for others to the detriment of one's self. I read them in a university class many years ago. I must've sold it back do to basic student poverty. Now I've tried my best to find them, no go.
