I have been to Jamaica. It is a beautiful country. There is still appalling discrimination and laws against black people. For example once a girl has a baby she must be sterilised, a hang up from the slave times. There are a few hotels on the Island, some owned by black men, some by white men. The hotel I stayed in was owned by a white American (I only know this because he and his entourage came to stay while I was there). Staff were paid the princely sum of $25 per week and had to pay for any breakages. I lifted a bottle from our table, the plate under it stuck to the bottle and then fell to the ground and broke. It was my fault, so I gave the waitress the price of the plate and when I saw the owner surrounded by his crowd, I went over and told him that I was so sorry for breaking his plate, and threw the price of it at him, and told him that he had better not charge the waitress. I could go on but I loved the Jamaican people, but hated how they were treated by their employers.

Actually there are two areas, the tourist area and the area where everyone else lives, very poor areas some people live in huts or shanties no running water or electricity! Of course you have all the amenities of home and then some in the touristy areas!!!

Syn, it's that way on most resort islands, sadly. The tourist money ought to be spread out a bit more, IMO.
