Player: Coco, It's unusual for continental land on Earth to be below sea level, and especially for it to not be completely inundated with water, as gravity causes water to flow downhill, obviously. But in a few arid spots, where rift valleys form as the Earth's crust spreads apart and tears and subsides, like Death Valley in California (-86 meters below sea level) and the Jordan River Valley (-430 meters at the Dead Sea), an extension of Africa's Great Rift Valley, we see these low spots. Other depressions can be formed by glacial or wind erosion, asteroid impact craters, or even by sinkhole collapse of underlying rock. The deepest continental rift is thought to be Baikal in Siberia. Lake Baikal is the oldest, deepest lake on Earth, 1620 meters deep.

Amazing! but any explanation why Jordan river passes through this lake of 200m below sea level, i supposed this river exits to the sea.

Bill, reading carefully, the question asks about the lowest 'freshwater lake' (potable, supporting varied life) then notes the nearby Dead Sea, also actually a lake, (like the Caspian or Aral 'Seas'), which through evaporation has become extremely saline, supporting very few organisms, is even lower in elevation. I don't see a contradiction.

[bobbo16], just like the Dead Sea I’m guessing long long ago the area was a sea where water levels change as so often does in nature.
