Where was the Republic of Rhodesia located?

I owe this answer to hearing the history of the Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs repeated by their owners at dog shows....

I lived there for 21 years and it was an amazing place without the apartheid everyone speaks about. it was more a social life, not dissimilar to what they had in England. And then Bob took over! !!!
