oh, you mean a peninsula.

Technically the sandy isthmus is the Tombolo. The Island is not. The Island is still considering separate from the mainland, because tombolos are temporary (in geological terms) manifestations of the prevailing tides and currents. Gibraltar is an Island connected by a tombolo to Spain.
