Fun fact. After strenuous exercise and heavy perspiration one loses a lot of salts in their sweat. If you then drink GatorAid it will not taste salty. When you have drunk enough of this electrolyte replacement "beverage" it will start to taste salty signalling to your body that you internal electrolytes are back in balance and it's time to switch to plain water if you're still thirsty to reestablish your internal fluid balance that was lost in sweat.

millwallmarty, If you need to make an electrolyte replacement of a child use rice water (made by boiling some rice in a lot of water), sugar and enough salt to make the solution taste like tears. That way you'll know if you have the right concentration of sodium (salt).

Magnesium and potassium are also essential electrolytes. Pedialyte would be better for athletes than Gatorade.

Laudy Miss Claudy, though I'd be wary of giving rice water too often to children, as rice is known to be high in heavy metals such as arsenic and cadmium, which can be removed in part from your rice by poring away and discarding the water that it's boiled in.
