Which tabletop role-playing game was first published in 1974?

I knew a guy in college who played every weekend, and he had a great girlfriend.

In the mid 1990s my son would invite friends over to the house to play D&D. I enjoyed watching them play but had no desire to play myself. Flash forward several years. My son AND daughter-in-law call and say, "Dad, get on your computer and we'll show you a really neat game." It was DDO. I've had my own guild ever since.
