The car was constructed from magnesium alloy which, because of magnesium's low density, made it lighter. Unfortunately this exacerbated the aftermath because the car burst into flames which were more intense than a normal fire and much more difficult to extinguish - pouring water onto magnesium makes it burn more.

It was Mike Hawthorne (the eventual winner) who was slowing for a pitstop causing Lance Macklin to swerve in front of Piere Levegh (the name he raced under). Estimates vary between 80-100 spectators were killed in the resulting carnage.

Player. Ty, The brakes locked on my 1985 MB in 1990 when I slowed down on a freeway and made a big U shape with 4 lanes of mild traffic. Fortunately, none of us hit. I never got another one.
