I have interpreted for the deaf for years. I would love to compare the Maori Sign Language to American Sign Language. That is interesting that it is a national language. I wonder why the United States has not done this.

Being deaf and hard of hearing since about 2 yrs old, I was allowed to use sign language in our home. My parents were pretty strict about that, They thought it was embarrassing. Lucky for me, my younger sister taught me sign language around 7 yrs old. It wasn't until my teen years that I was finally allowed to attend a deaf school. It changed my life. What New Zealand has done, I wish the rest of the world would recognize sign language as a universal language. That would be awesome.

Player #2683212, because it is unnecessary. All legal proceedings are done with regard to any language barriers in the case of criminal proceedings and civil also recognizes the use of sign language or other assistance needed for accommodation of a whole host of disabilities. if you were to.look on the official government docs and in official areas, you will notice lots of signage and explanatory notes referencing the availability of other forms of language and communication to many communities, including the deaf, blind, visually impaired, etc.

If Maori was recognised in 1987, Sign in 2006 and English not until 2018, was there no official language before 1987? Doesn't sound right to me...
