To the best of my known, they ere used to focus on a small group of stars which would hitherto be occluded by light such as the rising sun. The position of these star clusters would give early warning as to whether hunter/gathered should move due to seasonal requirements.

lo, I come from the West of England. My father an architect and amatuer historian said 'why does everyone get so excited about front doors!'
